Why we need Fats in our diet

Are you scared of eating a high fat diet? Does fat equals weight gain for you? Read this!

You don't need to eliminate all fat from your diet. In fact, some fats actually help promote good health. But it's wise to choose the healthier types of dietary fat and then enjoy them as part of a balanced diet.

Not all the dietary fats are the same though. Do you remember which ones are the good ones? Check out a post I made a little while ago that explains the difference!

Fat is essential to your health because it supports a number of your body's functions:

-Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell growth. They are the structural components of our cells and they also help keep our skin and hair healthy.

-Fats help your body absorb some nutrients, such as fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)and essential fatty acids (omega-3) and produce important hormones, too. Your body definitely needs fat.

-Dietary fats have important effects on brain functions and on brain health; they play structural and functional roles in neurons (our brain cells).

-Good dietary fats (omega-3 in particular) have a beneficial role on cardiovascular health, helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and reduce cholesterol levels.

-Dietary fats are also feared because of their cholesterol content. Most people think that eating dietary cholesterol will result in an increase in blood cholesterol too and therefore they avoid healthy foods like eggs. However, recent studies have actually found that is saturated fats that increase blood cholesterol and not dietary cholesterol.

-Are you trying to lose weight and think that you need to avoid fats? Wrong. Dietary fats are important in weight loss plans. They take longer to digest, meaning that we will feel satisfied and full for longer and no sugar cravings 2 hours post meal!
